Types of Empaths

Did you know there are several different types of empaths?

In my work as a therapist over the years, I can recall picking up on emotions from clients - in various settings, namely my work on crisis units. Until I discovered I was an empath though, I would always wonder why I was so incredibly stressed or drained after work, when my other colleagues weren’t affected that badly. It lead to a slew of bad decisions, mostly lots of drinking to “blow off steam”.

I began to wonder if it was me. Was I just super sensitive? Or were my cases just really heavy & intense. At that time, I hadn’t come across the term empath yet and had no idea I was one.

One client in particular was a young teenager. She was struggling with severe anxiety and her parents accepting that she felt like she was in the wrong body. I held a family conference in my office with her and her parents, who were very religious. Over the course of the meeting things began to grow in intensity.

I could physically feel her pain. Her anxiety. Her feeling like she wanted to crawl into a hole or better yet, run away. I’m feeling all of those emotions again even typing this, along with a migraine trying to come on - that’s how strong our gifts are. I remember the terrified look on her face as she began to shut down. She felt hopeless.

Thankfully, when by the time I encountered this particular client, I already knew of my gifts, and because of that, I was able to help her feel less alone. We are always sent those who need us or those we can learn from - in ways they couldn’t from others.

You have unique, special gifts. Being an empath is a gift. 💜
